Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said his bid for the 2027 presidential election will be financed through small contributions from ordinary Kenyans, dismissing claims that his campaign is backed by illicit or shadowy sources. Speaking during a recent public address, Matiang’i said his decision to run was driven by pressure from Gen Zs, professionals and other citizens who want a change in the country’s leadership.
Matiang’i strongly rejected suggestions that his campaign was funded through illegal activities, including gold smuggling. “I will finance my campaign through contributions from Kenyans. I do not smuggle gold from Sudan or the DRC. I am just Matiang’i, benefiting from the contributions of Kenyans,” he said, adding that he is not a wealthy businessman and has no hidden commercial interests.
He further explained that a significant portion of his campaign operations is being driven by volunteers, many of whom contribute their time and resources without pay. According to Matiang’i, the volunteer-driven model reflects growing public frustration with elite-funded politics and a desire for greater accountability in leadership.
There is currently no credible evidence or official investigation linking Matiang’i to gold smuggling or other illicit sources of campaign financing. Reports that mention gold smuggling largely focus on broader regional challenges and do not implicate the former Interior CS personally, making his remarks a pre-emptive response to political speculation rather than established allegations.
