Lekek Chebii has stepped down from the board of The Nairobi Hospital, citing personal reasons and an inability to dedicate sufficient time to his responsibilities. His resignation comes amid a period of heightened scrutiny over the hospital’s governance.
Chebii, appointed to the board in early February, said in his resignation letter that personal commitments prevented him from fulfilling the demands of the role. His resignation is effective immediately.
The Nairobi Hospital operates under the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), a membership-based body that elects the board and oversees strategic management.
His departure follows ongoing disputes over board elections, alleged conflicts of interest, and procedural irregularities that have drawn legal and public attention.
Earlier this year, the High Court temporarily halted the KHA’s Annual General Meeting after members challenged the process and financial reporting, further intensifying tensions.
Government officials have engaged in efforts to resolve the disputes, including convening meetings between board members, doctors, and stakeholders to restore stability.
Despite the governance challenges, the hospital remains a leading private healthcare provider in Kenya, with a history dating back to 1954.
Stakeholders are closely monitoring the board’s next steps as the institution navigates leadership transitions and ongoing internal conflicts.
Chebii’s resignation underscores the difficulties facing the hospital’s board and raises questions about accountability and transparency within the association.
The move is expected to influence ongoing discussions on governance reforms and the management of Kenya’s flagship private medical institution.
