Laikipia University closed indefinitely after two days of protests

Laikipia University has been closed indefinitely after two days of student protests triggered by the death of a first-year student.

The Registrar of Academic Affairs, Robert Muembi, announced the closure, citing security concerns and the need to restore order on campus.

The protests began shortly after news of the student’s death spread among the student body, leading to demonstrations demanding answers from university officials.

Eyewitnesses reported that students blocked access roads, set small fires, and engaged in other forms of civil unrest during the protests.

Classes and exams scheduled during the period were suspended, and academic activities were disrupted as the situation escalated.

University management directed all students to vacate the campus immediately to ensure their safety and allow security personnel to manage the unrest.

Police and other security agencies were deployed to the campus to contain the demonstrations and prevent further property damage.

The cause of the first-year student’s death has not been officially disclosed, and authorities have launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Student leaders have demanded transparency and accountability, calling for a full inquiry into the events leading to the death.

The closure has created uncertainty for students regarding the academic calendar, with management yet to confirm when classes and examinations will resume.

University officials said they will issue further communication on reopening once stability has been restored and the investigation has progressed.

The incident has reignited nationwide discussions about student safety, campus security, and crisis management in higher education institutions.
