Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Monday launched a sharp attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of failing to champion meaningful development projects while in office and dismissing his recent remarks as unconstructive.
Speaking in Nairobi City County, Kindiki challenged Gachagua’s record, stating that he could not point to a single major project he pushed for implementation during his tenure in government.
The Deputy President also responded to what he described as threats issued by Gachagua regarding insecurity in Meru North, where the former DP had allegedly issued a 10-day ultimatum to address banditry.
Kindiki maintained that banditry in the region is a long-standing issue spanning over a decade, and noted that the situation worsened during periods when individuals now allied to Gachagua were in charge of national security.
He highlighted his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary, stating that he spent months in the affected regions coordinating security operations, including deploying officers and overseeing crackdowns on bandit networks.
According to Kindiki, those operations significantly reduced criminal activity between 2023 and 2024, adding that the government remains committed to restoring stability following a recent resurgence of attacks.
He emphasized that renewed security operations are already underway and are being executed as part of the government’s duty to protect lives and property, not in response to political pressure or ultimatums.
The Deputy President further accused Gachagua of failing to support security efforts at the time, claiming he neither visited affected areas nor showed solidarity with residents despite holding high office.
Kindiki dismissed Gachagua’s rhetoric as রাজনৈতিক and ineffective, asserting that leadership should be measured by tangible impact rather than public statements and threats.
At the same time, Kindiki was engaged in high-level diplomatic and economic activities, hosting visiting Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Nairobi.
The meeting took place during the Kenya–China Business Forum held at the JW Marriott Hotel Nairobi, where senior government officials and business leaders from both countries were in attendance.
Kindiki reiterated that relations between Kenya and China have remained strong since 1963, driven by trade, infrastructure development, and long-standing bilateral cooperation.
He pointed to major Chinese-backed projects in Kenya, including railway development and investments in roads, manufacturing, water, and energy infrastructure across the country.
The Deputy President also flagged off the inaugural consignment under a new zero-tariff agreement negotiated between President William Ruto and Xi Jinping, which will allow Kenyan goods duty-free access to Chinese markets starting May 1, 2026.
He said the agreement is expected to boost exports of value-added products such as coffee, tea, avocados, macadamia, and horticultural produce, helping to correct the trade imbalance and create jobs for Kenyan producers.
