President William Samoei Ruto and Kimani Ichung'wa when they met residents of Kimbo Matangini, Juja Constituency, Kiambu County.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah faced a hostile reception on Friday, March 27, after residents in Juja, Kiambu County, openly heckled him in the presence of President William Samoei Ruto during an official tour.

The incident occurred at the start of the President’s working visit to the area, where local leaders had gathered to address residents on government development projects. Ichung’wah was among leaders accompanying the Head of State.

Trouble began when Ichung’wah rose to speak, with sections of the crowd shouting him down and waving him off. His attempts to continue addressing the gathering were repeatedly interrupted by jeers, making it difficult for him to deliver his message.

He initially launched into criticism of the opposition and sought to rally support for President Ruto’s administration, but the crowd remained unresponsive and continued heckling throughout his remarks.

In a bid to calm tensions, the Majority Leader shifted focus to ongoing development projects in the region, highlighting government initiatives. However, the change in tone did little to ease the hostility from residents.

The sustained backlash eventually forced Ichung’wah to cut his speech short, as the noise from the crowd overwhelmed his address.

Despite the tense moment, President Ruto, who was present at the event, did not intervene and observed as the situation unfolded.

Ichung’wah later downplayed the incident, suggesting that the reaction reflected the competitive and heated nature of politics in Kiambu County rather than a personal rejection.

The episode has since sparked political debate, with analysts interpreting the backlash as a signal of shifting political sentiment in parts of the Mt Kenya region, a key support base for the President.
