Kenya's Shujaa go down to Australia in Seville Sevens opener
Kenya Sevens kicked off the Seville Sevens on the wrong foot as they suffered a 42-0 loss to Australia on Friday Evening at the Estadio la Cartuja in Spain.
The Aussies dominated the play scoring six tries, unlike their Shujaa counterparts who failed to make any try throughout the game.
Australia made three tries in each half, with Henry Hutchison outplaying both Herman Humwa and Vincent Onyala to score between the posts for a 7-0 lead.
Moments later, Hutchison continued rubbing salt to injury after drawing in his markers, then racing to the white wash for his second try that was converted for 14-0 lead.
The Aussies were getting away with it and continued to exert their dominance as Maurice Longbottom teared through Kenya’s shaky defense to score the third try of the match that was converted to hand the Aussies a comfortable 21-0 halftime lead.
In the final half, Kenya had little to show as Corey Toole made two tries and Yool Yool sealed the victory with a converted try to award Australia the deserved win.
Kenya’s Shujaa were hoping to bounce back from the disappointing performance in Malaga Sevens last week, where they won once in the five matches played.
The win for Australia means they are Group D leaders ahead of day two of the competition. Other teams in the group include Canada and Scotland.
Kenya will be aiming to come back to winning ways against Canada on Saturday before taking on Scotland later on the same day.
Kenya must win the two encounters if they are to qualify for the Main Cup quarterfinals.
