Kenya’s Rugby Star Kevin Wekesa Shortlisted for Global Sport Sustainability Award

Kenyan rugby sevens international and Kabras RFC forward, Kevin Wekesa, has been named among the nine finalists for the 2025 Sport Positive Awards’ Next Generation Trailblazer Award, in recognition of his environmental campaign, Play Green with Kevin Wekesa.
Launched in 2024, the Sport Positive Awards honor individuals and organizations using sport to tackle environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental justice. A final shortlist of contenders will be revealed on August 29, with the winners to be announced on October 7.
Wekesa’s Play Green initiative focuses on infusing environmental responsibility into everyday sports practices. Within the national rugby setup, he halted the use of single-use plastics during training by distributing reusable bottles—preventing thousands of plastic waste items each month.
Beyond the field, he’s led the planting of over 1,500 trees in schools and communities, creating “Shujaa Forests” and educating young people on climate action.
Play Green is structured around four key pillars: Tree Planting, Education, Recycling, and Ending Single-Use Plastics. Over just two years, it has impacted more than 10 institutions, introducing projects like waste recycling at matches, promoting green transport, and building awareness that sustainability starts with every individual.
