Kenya’s national rugby sevens side, Shujaa, have been handed a daunting task after being drawn in Pool A alongside South Africa, Australia and Great Britain for the upcoming HSBC SVNS World Championship in Valladolid, Spain, set for May 29 to 31. The draw places Kenya against three seasoned opponents as the team continues its push for promotion to the World Rugby Sevens Series Division One next season.
The Valladolid tournament will be the second leg of the three-round World Championship series, following the Hong Kong Sevens and preceding the final round in Bordeaux, France. Teams are battling for a top-eight finish overall, which guarantees a place in the elite division for the 2026/27 campaign, making every match in Spain crucial for Shujaa’s ambitions.
Shujaa head to Valladolid buoyed by a respectable seventh-place finish in Hong Kong, where they beat France 21-7 in the placement playoff to earn eight valuable points. The result kept Kenya inside the promotion bracket and preserved hopes of returning to the top tier of the global sevens circuit.
Despite the positive finish in Hong Kong, the pool draw presents a major challenge. South Africa are the current form side after winning the Hong Kong leg, while Australia remain one of the most consistent teams in the competition. Great Britain, though lower in the standings, possess the experience and quality to trouble any opponent.
Kenya will however take confidence from their spirited performance against South Africa in Hong Kong, where they narrowly lost 26-22 in the quarter-finals after leading late in the contest. That display showed that Shujaa can compete with the best, even if lapses in concentration ultimately cost them a famous victory.
The squad has shown signs of growth in recent months after earning qualification for the World Championship through strong performances in the HSBC SVNS Challenger Series, where they secured a top finish to remain in contention for promotion. That resurgence has revived hopes of restoring Kenya’s place among the world’s best sevens nations.
For Shujaa, the clashes against Australia and Great Britain may be decisive, with victories in those matches likely to determine whether they reach the knockout rounds and remain in the top eight standings. Any slip-up in the group stage could leave Kenya vulnerable heading into the final round in Bordeaux.
The technical bench is expected to use the preparation window to tighten Kenya’s defensive structure and improve game management, areas that proved costly during the Hong Kong campaign. Narrow defeats and inconsistency have highlighted the fine margins at this level of competition.
A return to Division One would mark a major milestone for the Kenyan side, which has been rebuilding after relegation. Promotion would not only restore Shujaa to the highest level of the world series but also boost the team’s exposure to top-tier competition.
With the stakes higher than ever, the Valladolid leg now shapes as a defining moment in Kenya’s sevens revival. Drawn in one of the toughest pools, Shujaa must rise to the challenge against South Africa, Australia and Great Britain to keep alive their dream of reclaiming a place among rugby sevens’ elite.
