Kenya’s Deaf Women Footballers Battle for Deaflympics Glory

The University of Nairobi Sports Grounds came alive on August 7th and 8th, 2025, as the Deaf Football Federation of Kenya (DFFK) hosted the Deaflympics National Trials, bringing together top Deaf women footballers from across the country. The two-day event marked a crucial step in selecting Kenya’s national team for the 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan.

For many of the athletes, this was more than just a competition — it was a defining moment in their sporting careers. With the Deaflympics scheduled for November 15–26, 2025, the trials were a stage to showcase not only skill and athleticism but also the resilience and pride of the Deaf sports community.

DFFK President, Stephen Waweru, expressed his confidence in the crop of players who availed themselves for the National trials. “For two days, the trials have been successful, and players have shown morale. Our main aim is to have the best team to represent the nation ahead of the 2025 Summer Deaflympics. Just like the Olympics, we want to be consistent in participating in the tournaments. “

The trials highlighted the growing influence of inclusive sports in Kenya, with players demonstrating exceptional coordination, strategy, and teamwork — all communicated seamlessly through visual cues and Kenyan Sign Language. Coaches and officials praised the athletes’ commitment, many of whom have balanced training with school, work, and family responsibilities.

“This event is a celebration of talent, determination, and the spirit of inclusion,” said Georgine Auma, Secretary General of DFFK. “Our aim is not only to select a team capable of competing internationally but also to inspire Deaf youth across Kenya to dream big and believe in their abilities.”

As a Deaf-led media house, Signs TV was on the ground to provide in-depth coverage, capturing the electrifying moments on and off the pitch. The station’s presence underscored its continued mission to amplify Deaf voices and ensure that stories of resilience and achievement are told from within the community.

Looking ahead, the DFFK hopes to build on Kenya’s strong track record at past Deaflympics — where the nation has consistently ranked among the top African countries — and make an even greater mark in Tokyo.

The national trials were not just about picking a winning team; they were about igniting a movement. With every pass, goal, and celebration, the players embodied the unifying power of sports — a force that transcends barriers and reminds the world that talent knows no limits.
