Thousands of Kenyans from across the country thronged the newly constructed Wajir Stadium on Monday for the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations, marking the first time the national event has been hosted in the North Eastern region. The celebrations were presided over by President William Ruto at the 10,000-seater facility built ahead of the national holiday.

Residents began arriving at the stadium in the early hours of the morning as excitement gripped Wajir County. Security agencies mounted a major operation around the venue, with crowds streaming in to witness the historic celebrations and the President’s address.

This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations were held under the theme “Education, Skills and the Future,” with the government highlighting investments in education, technical training, innovation and youth empowerment as critical pillars for the country’s economic transformation.

The hosting of the celebrations in Wajir was widely viewed as a significant milestone in efforts to promote national cohesion and bring development closer to regions that have historically lagged behind in infrastructure and public investment. Leaders described the occasion as a strong statement of inclusivity and national unity.

In preparation for the event, the national government undertook extensive infrastructure projects across Wajir County, including the construction of the stadium, upgrading of roads, installation of street lighting, expansion of water and electricity networks, and improvements at Wajir International Airport.

Authorities also put in place elaborate security measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors attending the celebrations. Officials noted that the successful hosting of the national event reflected the region’s growing stability and readiness to accommodate major state functions.

The celebrations featured vibrant cultural performances, military displays and entertainment showcasing the rich heritage and diversity of communities from Wajir and the wider North Eastern region. The colorful presentations drew enthusiastic applause from the thousands of attendees.

Local leaders and elders used the occasion to highlight the development gains recorded in the county in recent years. In a symbolic gesture, residents presented President Ruto with 100 camels as a sign of appreciation for government development projects undertaken in the region.

Madaraka Day commemorates June 1, 1963, when Kenya attained internal self-rule from British colonial administration, paving the way for full independence later that year. This year’s celebrations placed Wajir firmly in the national spotlight, with leaders expressing optimism that the event would accelerate economic growth, investment and development opportunities across the North Eastern region.
