Kenyan Fans Face Sanctions for Ignoring Ban on Vuvuzelas and Drums at Kasarani

Kenyan football supporters have been warned against bringing vuvuzelas, whistles, and drums to Harambee Stars matches in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN), following defiance of a ban during their recent game.

Nicholas Musonye, chair of the CHAN Local Organising Committee (LOC), said Kenya risks penalties from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if fans ignore the rules.

“CAF officials asked why fans were still bringing these banned items despite prior warnings aired on TV and radio. We can’t afford to get Kenya fined,” Musonye said during an appearance on NTV’s Fixing the Nation.

Despite the LOC’s ban, fans attending Sunday’s match against the Democratic Republic of Congo were seen using whistles, vuvuzelas, and traditional drums like the isikuti.

Musonye explained that these items disrupt the match, especially when whistles from the crowd confuse players and officials on the pitch. He emphasized that the bans are in place to keep games running smoothly and to avoid disciplinary action from CAF.

The LOC plans to keep educating fans about the ban. “We’ll keep repeating this message. You’re free to sing and support the team vocally, but leave the instruments at home,” Musonye urged.

According to FIFA rules, musical instruments—including vuvuzelas and whistles—are not allowed in stadiums unless officially approved. If they disrupt the match, stadium staff must intervene.

Harambee Stars face Angola next in a Group A match at Kasarani Stadium this Thursday evening.
