The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has defended the Sh42.4 million insurance arrangement linked to preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), insisting there was no loss of public funds and that all procedures were conducted within approved football governance frameworks.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed has maintained that the insurance cover was a mandatory requirement under Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations for host nations, arguing that the federation complied fully with tournament conditions in securing the policy.
The controversy centres on claims that FKF engaged an intermediary to facilitate the insurance cover at a cost of Sh42.4 million, a figure now under scrutiny amid questions over procurement value and the selection process used to award the contract.
Investigators are also examining allegations that the intermediary involved may not have met full regulatory licensing requirements at the time of the transaction, raising concerns over compliance with insurance and procurement laws.
Attention has further focused on whether the federation followed competitive procurement procedures, with reports indicating that alternative insurance offers from established providers may have been available at significantly lower costs.
The selection process has therefore become a key point of contention, with oversight bodies seeking clarity on how the final provider was chosen and whether due diligence was adequately conducted before approval.
FKF leadership has rejected claims of impropriety, describing the allegations as misleading and politically motivated, and linking them to broader internal tensions within Kenyan football governance structures.
Hussein Mohammed has insisted that CAF played a central role in defining insurance requirements for CHAN, stating that national federations were operating under strict compliance obligations that limited procurement flexibility.
The federation has pledged to release a full breakdown of the insurance arrangement and approval process as scrutiny continues, while maintaining that all actions taken were in line with both CAF directives and internal governance procedures.
