Kenya Issues Middle East Alert as Israel-Iran Strikes Disrupt Air Travel

The Government of Kenya has issued a security advisory urging its citizens in the Middle East to remain vigilant following escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said the situation remains fluid and requires heightened awareness from Kenyans living and working in the region.
Sing’oei indicated that Kenya’s diplomatic missions across the Middle East are closely monitoring developments and maintaining contact with host governments to ensure the safety of nationals. He urged citizens to follow official guidance issued by local authorities.
The advisory follows joint military action by the United States and Israel targeting sites inside Iran, triggering retaliatory responses that have heightened tensions across the Gulf.
Regional security concerns intensified after Iran launched counter-strikes targeting military assets linked to US and allied interests, raising fears of a broader confrontation that could destabilise key transit and economic hubs.
Several Middle Eastern states responded by restricting or temporarily closing their airspace as a precautionary measure, disrupting commercial aviation and international travel routes connecting Europe, Asia and Africa.
The United Arab Emirates implemented airspace controls affecting major aviation hubs including Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central, leading to widespread flight suspensions.
In response, Kenya Airways announced the temporary suspension of its flights to Dubai and Sharjah, citing passenger and crew safety amid the evolving security landscape.
The national carrier confirmed that scheduled services on the affected routes were cancelled and advised passengers to monitor official communication channels for updates on rebooking and refunds.
Kenya Airways stated that operations would resume once conditions are deemed safe and airspace restrictions are lifted by relevant aviation authorities.
Other global airlines also began rerouting or suspending services to and through the Gulf region, reflecting wider industry caution as regulators assess risks associated with operating near conflict zones.
Aviation authorities issued safety advisories to carriers, warning against flying over areas considered high risk due to potential missile activity and military operations.
Beyond aviation, the crisis has sparked concerns over possible economic ripple effects, particularly for countries with significant diaspora populations and trade ties in the Middle East.
Kenyan officials emphasised that protecting nationals abroad remains a priority, with embassies on standby to provide assistance where necessary.
Nairobi has meanwhile called for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement through international mechanisms, urging all parties to pursue restraint as tensions threaten regional stability.
