The national para powerlifting squad for the visually impaired put on an excellent performance on the opening day of the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Almaty City, Kazakhstan, winning nine medals.
This outstanding result immediately establishes them as a formidable force in the visually impaired categories, indicating their intention to outperform their previous medal total from the 2024 championships in Astana.
According to news reports, when the crew arrived in Almaty on Sunday, they immediately began final preparations, which included important classification processes based on vision levels and body weight.

Overall, Kenya's strong performance on the first day yielded a total of one gold, five silver, and three bronze medals. The ladies' team contributed significantly to the medal haul, securing four silver medals across various categories. The men's team captain, Morris Kinyua, also showcased his prowess, earning a bronze medal in the 82.5 kg category.

A dominant performance by Kevin Mbugua earned the team the first gold. The Form Three student from Thika Secondary School for the Blind further added to his tally, clinching a bronze medal in the men's 67.5 kg category.

The Kenya Sports Association for the Visually Impaired (KESAVI) organizing secretary Henry Zungu said the team's preparations have positioned it to win more medals than last year.
"We had good preparations, which provided us a competitive advantage this year.
"We were in Astana in 2024, and we collected 12 medals, but now we aim for 20 plus," he said.
Team Kenya, which traveled with twelve players, will compete in all three categories of the competition: squat, bench press, and deadlift.
