Kenya and Indonesia on Monday signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries.

The MoUs were signed during a meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the State House in Nairobi.

The first MoU, on cooperation in energy, is aimed at facilitating investment in geothermal energy, transmission, and distribution of the power generated.

The second MoU, on cooperation in mining and geology, will involve joint studies, knowledge sharing, and capacity building between the two countries.

The third MoU will establish a framework between Kenya Biovax and Indonesia’s BioFarma for cooperation in technology transfer, contract manufacturing, registration, supply, and marketing of the vaccine portfolio that will be manufactured by BioFarma in Kenya.

The fourth MOU was between the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Indonesia Food and Drug Authority.

This will facilitate the strengthening, promotion, development, and implementation of regulatory cooperation in pharmaceutical products.

President Ruto said that the MoUs would help to boost trade and investment between Kenya and Indonesia, as well as cooperation in areas such as health, agriculture, and tourism.

At the same time, the head of state announced that Kenya has lifted visa restrictions on Indonesian passport holders, a move which President Ruto says is in line with Kenya being open for business.

The visit is part of Widodo’s efforts to expand Indonesia’s relations with African countries.
