Kdf Soldiers Linked To Sh330 Million Meth Theft From Intercepted Vessel Face Lawsuit

The value of methamphetamine allegedly stolen from a vessel intercepted in the Indian Ocean last October has risen to over Sh330 million, with court documents linking eight Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers and two civilians to the theft. Authorities say the suspects were implicated in siphoning off part of the drugs during the offloading process.
The seized consignment, intercepted on October 25, 2025, involved a dhow carrying more than a tonne of crystal methamphetamine, valued at over Sh8.2 billion. The seizure, conducted roughly 630 kilometres east of Mombasa, is considered one of the largest drug hauls in Kenya’s history.
Investigators allege the stolen portion of the meth was hidden at KDF barracks, raising concerns about security lapses and possible internal collusion. The court papers indicate that the soldiers used their positions to facilitate the theft, while the civilians reportedly acted as intermediaries.
The suspects appeared in court this week to face charges related to drug trafficking, unlawful possession, and conspiracy. During the hearing, they denied all allegations, and the case has been adjourned for further investigations and evidence submission.
Prosecutors have stressed the seriousness of the offence, noting that the involvement of military personnel in such operations undermines national security and efforts to combat organized crime. Authorities are also reviewing internal protocols to prevent future breaches involving armed forces personnel.
The investigation has drawn widespread attention, highlighting challenges in monitoring high-value seizures and the need for tighter oversight of security operations. Law enforcement agencies have promised a thorough inquiry to ensure accountability and recovery of the missing narcotics.
