Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has been elected the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) after securing 3,728 votes in the February 19, 2026 poll, marking a clear victory in a tightly contested race.
The election, conducted under the supervision of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, drew participation from advocates across the country who cast their ballots at designated polling centres nationwide.
Kanjama defeated Peter Wanyama, who garnered 2,616 votes, and outgoing Vice President Mwaura Kabata, who finished third with 2,086 votes. The margin underscored Kanjama’s broad backing within the legal fraternity.
The LSK presidency is a powerful platform in Kenya’s governance landscape, representing more than 20,000 practising advocates and frequently shaping national debate on constitutionalism, judicial reform, and the rule of law.
Kanjama’s election signals a leadership transition at a critical time as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election cycle, a period that traditionally places the legal profession at the centre of constitutional interpretation and electoral dispute resolution.
In his remarks following the announcement, Kanjama pledged inclusive leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the independence of the Bar while advancing professional welfare for advocates across Kenya.
Outgoing President Faith Odhiambo led congratulatory messages, urging unity within the society and expressing confidence in the incoming leadership’s ability to steer the organisation through evolving national challenges.
Observers note that Kanjama’s tenure for the 2026–2028 term will likely focus on strengthening institutional credibility, expanding access to justice, and reinforcing adherence to constitutional principles.
The decisive outcome places Kanjama at the helm of one of Kenya’s most influential professional bodies, positioning the LSK to continue playing a central role in shaping public discourse and defending the rule of law.
