Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has raised concern over an increase in inflammatory political remarks, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to national cohesion and peace ahead of the 2027 General Election. He spoke while appearing before the Senate of Kenya Standing Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration.

Kanja told senators that divisive statements by some political leaders are heightening tensions across communities. He cautioned that the normalisation of hostile rhetoric, particularly remarks perceived as ethnic or inciteful, risks destabilising public order if left unchecked.

The police chief said the National Police Service is closely monitoring political gatherings, media appearances and online platforms where such remarks are increasingly being made. He noted that inflammatory content is spreading rapidly through social media, complicating enforcement efforts.

According to Kanja, the National Police Service is working jointly with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to investigate and process cases linked to hate speech and incitement. He stated that files are forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions where sufficient evidence is established.

He revealed that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have been seconded to support investigations, particularly those involving digital evidence. The NPS Forensic Laboratory is also being used to analyse electronic devices and trace the origin of inflammatory content.

Kanja highlighted challenges in tracking anonymous and foreign-hosted social media accounts, saying some platforms operate outside Kenya’s jurisdiction. He called for enhanced international cooperation and possible legislative adjustments to address emerging cyber-related threats.

The Inspector General urged political leaders to exercise restraint and uphold responsible discourse, stressing that reckless statements can trigger unrest. He maintained that enforcement measures will remain firm but guided by constitutional safeguards, including freedom of expression.

Kanja reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that early intervention and proactive monitoring will be key to preventing escalation as political activities intensify nationwide.
