Kakamega County Constructs Homes for Vulnerable Families
The Kakamega County Government has introduced a Shelter Improvement Program aimed at building semi-permanent houses for vulnerable families, including widows, to provide them with suitable living conditions.
Under this initiative, the County government has erected 360 houses, with six houses in each of the 60 wards within Kakamega County.
Beneficiaries of the program have also received two blankets, one mattress, and a financial boost of Sh. 2,000 each to help them start anew.
Mophat Mandela, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender, and Culture, highlighted that water tanks have been installed at the homes of the beneficiaries to ensure a continuous water supply.
Governor Fernandes Barasa emphasized that the shelter improvement program will be an annual endeavor, with the county government identifying vulnerable families to assist. He further stated that over the next five years, they plan to increase the number of program beneficiaries to ten per ward, aiming to provide decent housing to as many people as possible.
The Governor also instructed that the beneficiaries be included in the Kazi Mashinani program, set to commence next month, to enable them to earn a livelihood and support their families.
