Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that intelligence-led, data-driven policing and enhanced multi-agency collaboration will form the backbone of the newly established Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, a specialized security formation aimed at tackling the growing and increasingly sophisticated security challenges facing the Nairobi metropolitan region.

Murkomen said the government is pursuing a modern policing model that places greater emphasis on intelligence gathering, crime analysis, technology-driven operations and proactive law enforcement. According to the Cabinet Secretary, the new unit is intended to shift policing from reactive responses to a preventive and predictive approach capable of identifying threats before they escalate into major security incidents.

The establishment of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit follows a directive by President William Ruto aimed at strengthening security coordination across Nairobi and its rapidly expanding metropolitan area. The unit is expected to serve not only Nairobi City County but also neighboring urban centers that are closely linked to the capital through economic, social and transport networks.

The Interior CS noted that the government has been studying successful metropolitan policing models from major global cities as it develops the framework for the new unit. He said lessons drawn from international law enforcement agencies will help Kenya build a professional, technology-enabled and highly responsive police service capable of addressing modern urban security threats.

Murkomen recently engaged senior officials from the New York Police Department as part of efforts to benchmark Kenya's plans against international best practices. The discussions focused on intelligence-led policing, crime prevention strategies, urban security management, emergency response systems, technological innovation and strengthening cooperation between security agencies.

A key feature of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will be enhanced coordination among multiple government agencies. The Cabinet Secretary said security threats in major cities often cut across different jurisdictions and institutions, making collaboration essential for effective crime prevention, investigations and emergency response operations.

The government also intends to integrate advanced technology into the operations of the new unit. Officials say data analytics, surveillance systems, digital intelligence tools and modern communication platforms will play a critical role in supporting officers on the ground and improving decision-making during security operations.

Murkomen emphasized that the success of the initiative will depend not only on technology and intelligence but also on public participation. He said the government is working toward a people-centered policing model that strengthens trust between law enforcement agencies and communities, encouraging residents to actively support crime prevention efforts through information sharing and cooperation.

Once fully operational, the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is expected to enhance public safety, improve emergency response times, strengthen crime detection capabilities and support better management of traffic, public order and urban security challenges. The government views the initiative as a major step in modernizing Kenya's policing architecture and ensuring that the country's capital remains secure for residents, businesses, investors and visitors.
