Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku

Kajiado County Governor Joseph Ole Lenku appeared before the Senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi to respond to queries raised in the latest Auditor‑General reports. The session was part of the Senate’s constitutional oversight role over county governments’ use of public funds.

Lenku was accompanied by senior county officials, including finance and technical officers, as he presented records and addressed questions on procurement decisions, expenditure of county funds, and compliance with statutory financial controls.

The committee focused on expenditures in health facilities across Kitengela, Ngong, and other areas, seeking clarity on contract awards, payment justifications, and adherence to procurement laws. The governor provided explanations and submitted some supporting documents during the hearing.

Lenku highlighted that some variances in the county accounts were due to administrative challenges and legacy financial issues inherited from previous periods. He pledged full cooperation with the committee and promised to submit additional documentation as required.

Senators stressed the importance of timely responses, warning that unresolved audit queries could undermine public confidence in county governance and delay budgetary processes. They emphasised that repeated failure to comply could trigger measures such as suspension of national treasury transfers.

The hearing forms part of a broader parliamentary effort to enhance transparency and accountability in devolved units, with several governors previously summoned to explain their financial management practices.

The committee will review all evidence submitted by Lenku and table a report in the Senate outlining its findings and recommendations. These may include directives for improved financial controls or further investigations where serious breaches are identified.

Governor Lenku’s appearance underscores the Senate’s commitment to enforcing accountability and proper management of public resources, reinforcing the oversight role of national institutions over county governments.
