The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated 24 candidates for appointment as Judges of the High Court and 13 others for the Environment and Land Court (ELC), in a major exercise aimed at strengthening judicial capacity and improving access to justice across the country.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, who chairs the Commission, said the nominations followed the conclusion of a rigorous and competitive recruitment process that attracted hundreds of applicants from across the legal profession, including magistrates, advocates, academics, and senior public officials.

The High Court nominees include Edward Muthoga Muriithi, William Musya Musyoka, Francis Gikonyo Muthuku, Enock Chacha Mwita, Rachel Chepkoech Ngetich, Lucy Mwahaki Njuguna, Elijah Obaga Ogoti, Hedwig Imbosa Ong’udi, Byram Ongaya, and Joseph Kiplagat Sergon among others.

Others nominated to the High Court bench include Mathews Nduma Nderi, Linnet Mumo Ndolo, Onesmus Makau Ndumbuthi, Dalmas Omondi Ohungo, Johnson Okoth Okello, Stephen Andersen Radido Okiyo, Samson Odhiambo Okongo, Munyao Sila, Yuvinalis Maronga Angima, and Daniel Ochieng Ogola.

The Environment and Land Court nominees include Onesmus Makau Ndumbuthi, Elijah Obaga Ogoti, Dalmas Omondi Ohungo, Samson Odhiambo Okongo, Yuvinalis Maronga Angima, Munyao Sila, Edward Muriithi, Bernard Kibet Sang, Wilkister Muyoka Simiyu, Paul Kipkemoi Tonui, Leah Njambi Waigera, John Walter Wanyonyi, and Justice Nyamu Desderio Nyaga.

The Commission noted that the selection process was conducted in line with constitutional requirements, with candidates undergoing interviews and assessments before being shortlisted.

Chief Justice Koome emphasized that the recruitment exercise was designed to promote meritocracy, transparency, and integrity within the Judiciary, while addressing staffing gaps that have contributed to case backlogs.

Once approved through the constitutional process, the nominees will be appointed by the President and deployed to various stations across the country to enhance service delivery in the justice system.

The High Court is expected to benefit from increased capacity in handling constitutional, criminal, and commercial disputes, while the ELC will be strengthened to deal with land, environmental, and natural resource-related cases.

The Judiciary has in recent years intensified recruitment and reforms aimed at improving efficiency and reducing delays in the resolution of cases.

The latest nominations now proceed to the next stage of vetting and approval before formal appointment.
