Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has insisted that Manchester City will never surpass Manchester United in terms of size and global stature. Speaking in a recent interview, Carragher said, “Manchester City will never be bigger than Manchester United. And Liverpool vs Man City will never be bigger than Liverpool vs Man United. That just won’t happen, it can’t happen.”
Carragher stressed that history plays a major role in defining the biggest clubs in England. “Historically, Liverpool and Manchester United will always be the biggest two clubs in this country. I don’t think that will ever change,” he explained, adding that the rivalry between Liverpool and United remains the most significant fixture in English football.
He went on to acknowledge Manchester City’s recent dominance under Pep Guardiola but argued that history and identity cannot be replicated overnight. “It’s very difficult for teams who come later. It’s almost set in stone who the huge clubs are,” Carragher said, suggesting that City’s rise does not automatically elevate them above the traditional powerhouses.
Carragher concluded by admitting that City may continue to win more trophies in the coming years, but their achievements won’t alter the established order. “They may end up having more trophies and league titles if they carry on winning and if United keep not being in the shout for trophies, but it’s difficult to see any club in this country ever being above Liverpool or Manchester United in terms of size and stature,” he said.
