The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student Sheryl (also reported as Sheril) Adhiambo in Huruma, Nairobi, during a police operation on Saturday night .

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in Huruma Ngei I area, where police officers were reportedly pursuing suspected robbery suspects following a complaint lodged at Huruma Police Station earlier in the evening .

According to eyewitness accounts, Adhiambo was struck by a stray bullet while police officers fired shots as they attempted to arrest suspects who had allegedly resisted arrest, with residents claiming that officers discharged live ammunition amid a chaotic confrontation .

Police have stated that officers fired warning shots into the air after a hostile crowd allegedly began pelting them with stones, insisting that the operation was aimed at dispersing the crowd and apprehending suspects, not harming civilians .

Following the shooting, Adhiambo was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, triggering anger and protests by Huruma residents, who blocked roads, lit bonfires, and damaged property while demanding justice for the slain student .

In response to the incident, IPOA confirmed that it had deployed a rapid response team from its Nairobi regional office to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and establish individual responsibility .

IPOA said the probe will examine the conduct of the officers involved, the use of firearms during the operation, and whether police actions complied with the law and established procedures, adding that accountability will follow if wrongdoing is established .

Human rights groups and the victim’s family have demanded transparency and justice, accusing police of excessive use of force and calling for swift action to prevent similar incidents, as pressure mounts on authorities to ensure credible investigations .

Meanwhile, the National Police Service has urged residents to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed, assuring the public of its cooperation with IPOA as the country awaits the outcome of the probe into Adhiambo’s death .
