International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024
Kenya joined the world today in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
Observed annually on December 3rd, IDPD is a global platform to promote awareness and understanding of disability issues.
This day was first declared by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 in 1992. Its main focus is to create awareness and understanding of disability issues around the globe by ensuring social protection for PWDS.
This year, the theme, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," highlights the importance of empowering persons with disabilities to take the lead in shaping their own destinies and contributing to society.
Speaking in Bungoma County during an event to mark the day, Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Alfred Mutua said the government is taking significant strides to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to quality education, healthcare, employment, and social services.
The CS urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector organizations, and civil society, to work together to promote the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.
Meanwhile, advocacy groups and disability rights organizations on Monday made a call to financial institutions to increase investments in disability inclusion.
This follows a recent banking industry report which revealed that less than one percent of financial institutions operating in Kenya have taken steps to include persons with disabilities in their workforce.
According to the groups, this figure underscores the need for increased investment in accessibility and inclusion within the financial sector.
They now want financial institutions to take proactive steps to create inclusive workplaces and provide accessible services.
