CS Murkomen orders police crackdown on illegal firearms in Kuria and Kilgoris
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered police to collect all illegal firearms in Kilgoris, Emurua Dikirr, Kuria East and Kuria West constituencies as part of renewed efforts to restore peace and enhance security in the region. The directive targets areas that have experienced persistent insecurity linked to the widespread possession of unlicensed weapons.
Murkomen said the government will no longer tolerate the circulation of illegal firearms, which he noted have fueled inter-community clashes, banditry and loss of life. He emphasized that the safety of residents remains a top priority for the Interior Ministry and security agencies.
The CS instructed the National Police Service to intensify operations on the ground, including door-to-door intelligence-led disarmament, while also encouraging residents to voluntarily surrender illegal weapons. He warned that those found in possession of unlicensed firearms or ammunition will face strict legal action.
Murkomen further called on local leaders, elders and administrators to support the disarmament exercise, saying community cooperation is critical for lasting peace. He noted that dialogue and trust-building efforts will go hand in hand with security operations to address the root causes of conflict.
The move is part of a broader government strategy to stabilize insecurity-prone areas in Narok and Migori counties. Authorities say the collection of illegal firearms will help prevent further violence, allow displaced families to return home and create an environment conducive to peaceful coexistence and development.
