Scenes at the Kapsabet School for the deaf as ambulances save lives

A tragic accident at a school for the deaf in Kapsabet, Nandi County, on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, has left one learner dead and ten others injured after falling into an open septic tank on the school grounds. Witnesses said the pupils were near the school perimeter when the incident occurred, reportedly around the time President William Ruto’s motorcade passed through the area.

The injured learners were rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that one learner died on arrival while the ten others sustained injuries of varying severity. Doctors said they were stabilising the children and monitoring their recovery closely.

Parents and community members expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. Many rushed to the hospital seeking updates on their children, while teachers and school officials called for urgent safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Following the accident, President William Ruto visited the school to offer his condolences to affected families, learners, and staff. During the visit, he donated Sh5 million to assist with immediate needs and fund safety improvements and reconstruction at the school.

Ruto also visited some of the injured students at the hospital, offering encouragement and pledging government support for their medical care and rehabilitation. Officials said the donation would be used to secure hazardous areas and improve overall school safety.

The accident has sparked wider concerns about school infrastructure safety, particularly in institutions for vulnerable learners such as schools for the deaf. Authorities and parents called for urgent inspections and enforcement of safety protocols.

County and national education officials have pledged to review school facilities across the region, take corrective measures, and prevent similar tragedies. They also urged schools to regularly audit dangerous structures such as open pits and septic tanks.

Community leaders emphasised the importance of creating safe environments for learners, especially during high-profile visits or events that may attract children to the edges of school grounds.

Education officials said they would continue to monitor the condition of the injured students and ensure families receive timely updates. Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.

The incident has reignited discussions about accountability and the responsibility of school management to maintain safe learning spaces. Experts noted that open structures on school premises pose significant risks if not properly secured.

Parents called for stricter supervision and clear safety protocols to prevent children from accessing hazardous areas. They also urged the government to provide additional funding for safety upgrades in schools across the county.

Authorities said they would coordinate with local education boards, health services, and safety inspectors to ensure schools comply with safety standards. Meanwhile, the Kapsabet community continues to mourn the loss of one learner and support the recovery of the ten injured students.
