Nandi Governor Hon. Stephen Sang condemns police brutality in his home county Nandi
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has condemned an alleged assault involving police officers at Nandi Hills Police Station, describing the incident as unacceptable and contrary to the values of the National Police Service. The condemnation follows the circulation of CCTV footage showing officers allegedly using excessive force on men who were reportedly playing pool in a local establishment.
In response, the Inspector General has ordered the Internal Affairs Unit to immediately investigate the incident and submit a comprehensive report within three days. He warned that any officers found culpable would face firm disciplinary and legal action in line with the law.
The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights, stressing that misconduct by individual officers undermines public trust and the integrity of the service as a whole.
Separately, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched its own investigation into the incident. IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that a rapid response team had been deployed to Nandi Hills to independently establish the facts surrounding the alleged assault.
IPOA stated that the team will record statements from victims and witnesses, review CCTV footage, and assess whether the officers involved acted within the law and established policing procedures.
The authority also condemned the use of unnecessary force and urged members of the public to report incidents of police misconduct to enable swift accountability.
The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed debate over police conduct, with calls for transparency and justice as both internal and external investigations get underway.
Authorities say further updates will be issued once the Internal Affairs Unit and IPOA conclude their respective probes.
