IEBC to Announce By-Election Dates Next Week, Allays Fears of 2027 Vote-Rigging

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that it will release a roadmap for by-elections next week to fill 24 vacant elective positions across the country.
Speaking during a consultative roundtable between IEBC and the Kenya Media Organizations, the IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that preparations for the mini-polls are in an advanced stage.
“For the by-elections, we will announce the date and time in a week’s time. We should finalize the by-elections by the end of this year,” he stated.
The IEBC boss assured the public that the commission intends to conclude all by-elections before the end of the year.
According to Ethekon, the by-elections will address various vacant seats, including parliamentary and ward positions that have become empty due to the deaths of elected leaders or court-ordered nullifications of previous elections.
Meanwhile, the chair, who also sought to allay fears of vote-rigging in the 2027 General Election, vowed that the polls will be free and fair.
Ethekon dismissed concerns raised by some Kenyans and leaders about potential electoral malpractice, particularly in the presidential race.
The concerns were sparked by recent comments from a section of leaders who declared their intention to ensure President William Ruto's re-election "by all means."
Ethekon categorically ruled out the possibility of rigging, calling such fears "impossible."
