As the world observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), the global focus on inclusion is being met with a mixed reality in highlighting both proactive advocacy and persistent flaws in crucial democratic processes.
The day is dedicated to honoring champions who demonstrate that strength manifests in many forms and abilities shine in countless ways.
The global commemoration serves as a powerful call to action for governments, organizations, and communities worldwide to solidify their commitment to building a more inclusive society, with the core message emphasizing the need for continuous support where "everyone feels seen, supported, and included, not just today, but every single day."
However, this national commitment was recently questioned by events during the last round of by-elections.
Election observers noted that the polls were marred by a significant challenge concerning the accessibility and privacy of voting for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The primary issue identified was the absence of specialized equipment designed to help PWDs maintain the secrecy of their vote while casting their ballots.
Observers from the Inuka group, operating under the Angaza Kura Initiative, specifically reported on the by-election in the Kabuchai/Chwele Ward of Bungoma County.
They noted that PWD voters faced considerable difficulty participating, as the lack of necessary tools compromised their ability to vote independently and privately, underscoring a critical loophole in national electoral accessibility measures.
In contrast to the challenges at the polls, Kajiado County saw a strong demonstration of advocacy during the observation of the IDPD.
A group representing PWDs staged a solidarity walk in Kajiado Town, advocating for greater community inclusion and respect for their fundamental rights.
The walk was specifically organized to sensitize the local community and leaders about the urgent need to integrate PWDs into various development projects and leadership positions. During the demonstration, participants emphasized demands centered on ensuring their security, access to quality education, and the creation of favorable environments that allow them to carry out their daily work activities effectively.
