ICC Launches Probe Into Alleged War Crimes by RSF in Sudan’s El-Fasher and Darfur Region

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced that it is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Fasher city and the wider Darfur region. The ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) said it is gathering and preserving evidence related to reports of mass killings, sexual violence, and targeted attacks on civilians in the conflict-torn areas.

According to the ICC Prosecutor, the scale and nature of atrocities reported in El-Fasher — including murder, torture, and forced displacement — may constitute serious violations under the Rome Statute. The RSF, which seized control of the North Darfur capital after months of fighting with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), has been accused by international monitors and humanitarian agencies of committing systematic attacks against non-Arab communities.

The ICC reaffirmed that although Sudan is not a State Party to the Rome Statute, it retains jurisdiction over Darfur through a 2005 United Nations Security Council referral. Prosecutors have invited individuals, organizations, and humanitarian agencies with credible evidence — including photos, videos, documents, or witness testimonies — to submit them for potential prosecution.

The probe comes amid mounting international concern over escalating violence in Sudan, where millions have been displaced and thousands killed since the conflict erupted in April 2023. The ICC said it is working closely with partners to ensure accountability for victims and to prevent the destruction of critical evidence.

If sufficient proof is established, the Court may issue arrest warrants against those found responsible for directing or executing the crimes. The ICC emphasized that the ongoing investigation marks a crucial step toward justice for the victims of Darfur’s renewed atrocities.
