Homicide detectives have been deployed to Kericho County to lead investigations into the burial of 14 unidentified bodies discovered in a public cemetery under unclear circumstances, in a case that has triggered widespread concern.

The team, drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, is overseeing preparations for the exhumation of the bodies at Kericho Public Cemetery, where the remains were reportedly buried in a single grave.

Authorities say the discovery was made following reports from local officials and residents who raised alarm over suspicious burial activities at the cemetery, prompting an immediate security response.

Preliminary information indicates the bodies were interred without proper documentation, identification, or notification of next of kin, raising serious legal and ethical questions over how the process was handled.

Investigators believe the bodies may have been transported from neighboring counties, including Kisii County and Nyamira County, before being buried in Kericho, though this line of inquiry remains under active investigation.

The exhumation exercise is expected to involve forensic experts, government pathologists, and crime scene personnel who will conduct postmortem examinations aimed at establishing the identities and causes of death.

Detectives are also seeking to determine whether the deaths were natural, accidental, or the result of criminal acts, amid reports suggesting that some of the bodies may have shown signs of physical trauma.

Police have already taken into custody a cemetery caretaker believed to have information critical to the investigation, as officers work to establish who authorized the burials and under what circumstances.

Kericho County officials have distanced themselves from the incident, maintaining that the burials were not sanctioned by the county government and calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.

Residents and civil society groups have demanded accountability, warning that the incident points to possible systemic failures in mortuary management, public health oversight, and record-keeping practices.

There are also concerns that the 14 bodies may not be the only undocumented burials at the cemetery, with investigators expected to widen their probe to determine whether similar cases exist.

The case has now been escalated into a major investigation, with authorities under pressure to establish the truth, identify the deceased, and ensure that any individuals found culpable face the full force of the law.
