The government has postponed the reopening of schools for a week until May 6, 2024.

While the original plan was for schools to resume classes today, April 29th, Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu said some schools have been adversely affected by the ongoing floods which might put learners and teaching staff at risk.

The Ministry has directed officials to assess the situation in all affected schools and gather data on the extent of the damage.

“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the devastating floods is now approaching the one-hundred mark, with 10 people losing their lives on Sunday and 42 others still missing.

Three of the deaths were reported in Garissa, three in Homabay, one in Nairobi’s Mathare, one in Bomet, one in Kirinyaga, and one in Makueni.

37,595 households have been affected, with nearly half displaced from their houses.

5774 livestock have been lost while 32,712 acres of crops have been affected by the floods.
