The Government has released Sh2.4 billion for the April 2026 Inua Jamii cash transfer programme, in a move aimed at strengthening social protection for vulnerable groups across the country. The disbursement will benefit more than 1.2 million registered beneficiaries under the flagship welfare initiative.
According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, a total of 1,213,066 Kenyans are set to receive the latest monthly payments. The programme continues to target low-income and vulnerable households, including older persons, persons living with severe disabilities, and orphaned or vulnerable children.
Each beneficiary will receive Sh2,000 for the April cycle, consistent with the standard monthly allocation under the Inua Jamii framework. The funds are intended to help recipients meet essential needs such as food, healthcare, shelter, and other basic living expenses.
The ministry confirmed that the money has already been disbursed through the established payment system, with beneficiaries expected to access the funds via mobile money platforms and approved payment agents across the country.
Older persons aged 70 years and above form one of the largest groups benefiting from the programme. The cash transfer is designed to support elderly citizens who are often without steady income and may depend on family members or community support for survival.
Persons living with severe disabilities are also key beneficiaries of the initiative. The programme provides financial relief to individuals who face significant barriers to employment and require additional support for medical care, mobility, and daily living needs.
The Orphans and Vulnerable Children category remains an important component of Inua Jamii. Under this category, households caring for children without parental support or living in extreme vulnerability receive monthly assistance to help with education, nutrition, and welfare.
Government officials have reiterated that the programme is part of a broader national social protection strategy aimed at reducing poverty and inequality. It is also intended to cushion vulnerable populations against rising living costs and economic shocks.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection stated that the April disbursement reflects the government’s continued commitment to ensuring timely payments to beneficiaries, despite competing fiscal demands and budgetary pressures.
Officials added that systems have been strengthened to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and ensure that funds reach intended recipients directly without unnecessary administrative bottlenecks.
The Inua Jamii programme is fully digitised, with payments primarily processed through mobile money channels. This approach has helped enhance transparency and reduce cases of fraud and payment delays that were previously reported under manual systems.
Beneficiaries across various counties are expected to start receiving notifications confirming receipt of funds. The ministry has encouraged them to verify payments through their registered phone numbers or designated pay points.
County-level social protection officers have been tasked with monitoring the rollout to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their allocations without disruption. They are also expected to assist those who may face challenges accessing the funds.
The government has maintained that the programme remains one of the largest direct cash transfer initiatives in the region, reaching over one million households monthly and playing a critical role in poverty alleviation efforts.
As economic pressures continue to affect households across the country, the Inua Jamii cash transfer is expected to remain a key policy tool for supporting vulnerable Kenyans, with the government pledging sustained funding and improved delivery systems in future cycles.
