The government has announced a major crackdown on counterfeit and substandard alcoholic beverages circulating in Kenya, warning that strict action will be taken against manufacturers involved in illegal production and distribution. Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security is closely monitoring the rise of fake alcohol products that imitate legitimate brands, posing serious risks to public health and undermining industry standards.
Omollo revealed that multi-agency enforcement operations, involving the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and the National Police Service, have already led to a surge in seizures of counterfeit products. Many of these were direct copies of genuine brands, highlighting widespread illicit activity in the sector.
He further noted that intelligence reports indicate some licensed manufacturers may be producing substandard alcohol, depriving the government of revenue and endangering consumers’ lives. Omollo described the proliferation of fake brews as a grave national concern, particularly during festive seasons when alcohol consumption typically rises.
To curb the menace, the government has ordered all relevant agencies to intensify inspections and enforcement measures. Manufacturers found guilty of producing or distributing illicit alcohol will face prosecution and have their licences withdrawn, signaling zero tolerance for violations of the law.
Authorities have also urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to regulatory bodies. The crackdown forms part of broader national efforts to address illicit brews and substance abuse, ensuring both public safety and the integrity of Kenya’s alcohol industry.
