The government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Transmara South, Narok County, following violent ethnic clashes that left at least seven people dead and more than 120 houses torched. The curfew was announced by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat as security agencies moved to contain the unrest and prevent further loss of life.
According to police, the violence erupted after renewed tensions between rival communities in parts of the region, quickly escalating into attacks on homes and property. Several families were forced to flee as houses were set ablaze, leaving many residents displaced and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
DIG Lagat said the curfew, which runs from dusk to dawn, is aimed at restoring calm and allowing security officers to conduct operations to flush out perpetrators and recover illegal weapons. He warned that anyone found violating the curfew or inciting violence would face the full force of the law.
The police boss also cautioned politicians and individuals suspected of financing or instigating the clashes, saying they were under active investigation. He appealed to local leaders and residents to cooperate with security agencies and embrace dialogue to end the cycle of violence.
The latest clashes have reignited concerns over recurring ethnic conflicts in parts of Narok County, often linked to land disputes and historical grievances. Authorities say long-term peace efforts, including community engagement and conflict resolution mechanisms, will be prioritised alongside the ongoing security operation.
