Gor Mahia Make Statement With 5-0 Victory Over APR In CECAFA Kagame Cup Opener

Gor Mahia made a commanding start to their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign after thrashing APR FC of Rwanda 5-0 in their opening Group A match at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. The Kenyan champions dominated the contest from start to finish to collect all three points and move to the top of their group.
The emphatic victory over the Rwandan champions gives K'Ogalo an early advantage in the race for a place in the knockout stage, with the five-goal margin also providing a significant boost to their goal difference. The performance underlined the club's ambitions of challenging for the regional title.
Head coach Charles Akonnor named a strong starting line-up for the opening fixture, blending experienced players with several new signings as Gor Mahia began their campaign on a high note. The team controlled possession, created numerous scoring opportunities and kept a clean sheet throughout the match.
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi started between the posts, while Mike Kibwage captained the side in the absence of regular skipper Sylvester Owino, who missed the match after sustaining a minor injury during training ahead of the tournament.
Gor Mahia qualified for the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup after winning the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title. The tournament offers the club an opportunity to test itself against some of the strongest teams from the East and Central African region ahead of continental assignments.
The 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup is being held in Kigali from July 24 to August 7, bringing together 12 clubs from the CECAFA region. Teams are divided into groups, with the top performers advancing to the semi-finals.
The convincing win over APR, one of Rwanda's most successful clubs, strengthens Gor Mahia's hopes of ending a long wait for regional glory. The Kenyan giants last won the CECAFA Kagame Cup in 1985.
Kenya is represented in this year's tournament by both Gor Mahia and Tusker FC, with the two clubs seeking to restore the country's dominance in East and Central African club football.
Gor Mahia will now shift focus to their remaining Group A fixtures, aiming to build on the impressive victory over APR FC and secure qualification for the knockout stage.
