Former DP Rigathi Gachagua campaign team storms Gikomba market
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken his political campaign to Gikomba Market in Nairobi, thanking traders for what he described as a warm reception and New Year goodwill.
Addressing the traders, Gachagua praised their role in sustaining the national economy through taxes and daily enterprise despite difficult working conditions.
He said traders across Nairobi work tirelessly yet struggle to access basic services from government institutions meant to serve them.
Gachagua framed justice and fair treatment as fundamental rights, insisting they should not be privileges reserved for a few.
He used the visit to highlight long-standing grievances between traders and Nairobi City County authorities.
According to Gachagua, market traders have endured harassment, poor service delivery and inconsistent enforcement of county regulations.
He singled out Marikiti Market in Starehe Constituency as an example of traders who have suffered prolonged hostility from city officials.
Gachagua argued that traders who pay taxes deserve dignity, protection and efficient public services in return.
He pledged to push for reforms that would transform Nairobi’s governance and relationship with the informal sector.
The former deputy president said Nairobi City County must be reimagined and rebuilt to serve residents more fairly.
He presented his campaign as a response to what he described as years of neglect and mismanagement at the county level.
Gachagua assured traders that their complaints had been heard and would form part of his political agenda.
His remarks reflect a broader strategy to court informal sector workers, a critical voting bloc in the capital.
As political activity intensifies ahead of the next general election, market traders are increasingly becoming a focal point for national leaders seeking grassroots support.
