Gabon Suspends Social Media Over Content That Stokes Conflict

Gabon’s High Authority for Communication (HAC) has ordered an immediate nationwide suspension of social media platforms, citing concerns that online content is fuelling conflict and deepening divisions. The announcement was made during a televised address on Tuesday by HAC spokesman Jean‑Claude Mendome.
The regulator said the decision follows the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorised disclosure of personal data, along with content deemed defamatory, hateful, or insulting. Authorities stressed that such material threatens social cohesion, public morality, and national stability.
While specific platforms were not named, major services including Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok are believed to be affected, as they are widely used in Gabon. The suspension is expected to remain in effect until further notice.
HAC emphasised that the action is intended to curb content that undermines human dignity and national security, particularly in the context of recent tensions within the country.
Officials clarified that freedom of expression remains a fundamental right, but it must be exercised responsibly, without inciting conflict or spreading harmful misinformation.
Observers say the move highlights the government’s increasing scrutiny of digital spaces, especially social media, in maintaining public order and unity.
Critics of the suspension argue that blanket bans could limit access to vital information and hinder communication, particularly for citizens reliant on social platforms for news and social interaction.
HAC has indicated that the measure is temporary and that platforms may resume operations once content compliance and moderation standards are verified to ensure they do not threaten social stability.
