Four people were killed on Saturday following a deadly bandit raid in Kakongu area of Turkana County, police have confirmed, in the latest incident of insecurity to hit the region.
Turkana South Police Commander John Tarus said armed bandits attacked residents in the area, opening fire before fleeing with a large number of stolen livestock.
According to police, the victims were shot during the raid, with at least one of them reported to have been caught in the crossfire as the attackers engaged locals.
The assailants are said to have driven away an unspecified number of animals, dealing a major economic blow to families who rely heavily on pastoralism for survival.
Security agencies launched an immediate operation following the attack, deploying officers to track the bandits and recover the stolen livestock.
Commander Tarus said pursuit operations are ongoing, adding that the terrain and porous nature of the region often complicate efforts to combat banditry.
He noted that additional security measures have been put in place in Kakongu and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
Turkana County has witnessed recurrent bandit raids in recent years, with local leaders and residents repeatedly calling for sustained security operations and long-term solutions to address the cycle of violence.
