Former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Lyula Khamasi has died at the age of 79 after a long battle with diabetes, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has announced. Khamasi passed away while undergoing treatment, marking the end of a life dedicated to public service and community leadership.

Governor Barasa led leaders from Kakamega County and across the country in mourning the former legislator, describing him as a committed and principled leader who served his constituents with dedication. He conveyed condolences to Khamasi’s family, friends, and the people of Shinyalu during the time of grief.

Khamasi was first elected to Parliament in 1997, winning the Shinyalu seat at a time when Kenya’s multiparty democracy was taking root. He quickly established himself as a vocal representative, focusing on issues affecting rural communities and local development.

He was re-elected in 2002, serving a second term under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) government that came into power following sweeping political reforms. His tenure coincided with major national changes, including constitutional debates and economic recovery efforts.

During his 10 years in Parliament, Khamasi was known for championing grassroots development initiatives, particularly in education, infrastructure, and access to basic services within Shinyalu Constituency. He served until 2007, when he lost the seat in the general election.

Tributes continue to pour in from political leaders and residents who remember him as a humble and accessible leader. The family is expected to announce funeral and burial arrangements in the coming days as preparations begin to lay the former MP to rest.
