The Ministry of Interior has confirmed that the death toll from recent floods in Kenya has risen to 71, following the reporting of three additional fatalities in Nairobi, the Eastern Region, and the Coast. Authorities say the latest figures come as rescue teams continue to recover victims from submerged areas.

Nairobi remains the hardest-hit area, accounting for 33 of the confirmed deaths. The Eastern Region has reported 18 fatalities, while the Coast and other counties continue to deal with flash floods that have displaced thousands of residents.

Earlier in the week, the toll was reported at 62, including several children, highlighting the ongoing severity of the flooding that began after days of relentless heavy rainfall. Emergency services, including the National Police Service, have been conducting search and rescue operations in both urban and rural flood zones.

Infrastructure across affected regions has suffered extensive damage. Roads, bridges, and homes have been destroyed, and overflowing rivers in Nairobi have disrupted traffic and complicated rescue efforts.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with safety advisories as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall across several regions. Rising river levels and saturated grounds increase the risk of further flooding and casualties.

Government and relief agencies are coordinating efforts to provide emergency assistance, including temporary shelters, food, and medical care for displaced families. Evacuations have been recommended in high-risk areas to prevent further loss of life.

The ongoing floods have underscored the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness, particularly in low-lying urban and rural areas prone to flash floods. Officials continue to monitor river basins and warn communities to take precautionary measures.

As Kenya grapples with one of its deadliest flood events in recent years, authorities emphasize that the situation remains fluid, with the possibility of additional fatalities and displacement as heavy rains continue.
