Five people have been killed while four others remain missing after suspected militants attacked a civilian vehicle in Mandera County near the Kenya–Somalia border. Mandera County Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa confirmed the incident, saying security officers had launched a major operation to pursue the attackers and search for the missing passengers.

The attack occurred along a remote road in the volatile northeastern region where armed militants have repeatedly targeted vehicles and civilians. According to police reports, the gunmen intercepted the vehicle before opening fire on the occupants, triggering panic as passengers attempted to flee for safety.

Witnesses said the attackers were heavily armed and appeared to have planned the ambush in advance. Several passengers reportedly escaped into nearby bushes during the shooting while others were either killed on the spot or disappeared during the chaos that followed the assault.

Security officers who arrived at the scene recovered the bodies of five victims as rescue teams combed the surrounding area in search of survivors and the missing persons. Authorities fear some of those unaccounted for may have been abducted or injured while escaping through the rough terrain.

Police suspect the attack was carried out by Al-Shabaab militants operating near the porous Kenya–Somalia border. The extremist group has frequently launched cross-border raids targeting civilians, police officers, quarry workers and public service vehicles in Mandera and neighbouring counties.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity facing residents in Kenya’s northeastern corridor. Despite increased security patrols and intelligence operations, militants continue to exploit remote border routes to stage deadly ambushes before retreating across the border.

Security agencies immediately deployed additional personnel to the area following the attack, including specialised officers tasked with tracking the assailants. Road patrols were intensified as authorities sought to prevent further attacks and reassure frightened residents.

Local leaders condemned the killings and called on the national government to strengthen security operations in Mandera County. Community elders also appealed for better protection of civilian vehicles travelling along routes considered highly vulnerable to militant attacks.

Residents described scenes of fear and confusion after news of the ambush spread across the region. Families of the victims and missing persons gathered at local police stations and health centres seeking information about their loved ones as search efforts continued late into the evening.

The attack adds to a series of recent security incidents reported in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties where suspected militants have increasingly targeted transport routes and security patrols using ambushes and improvised explosive devices.

Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa assured residents that security teams were pursuing crucial leads and vowed that those responsible for the deadly attack would be brought to justice. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing as the search for the four missing persons continues.
