Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir pledges NTSA probe and highway crackdown after 15 people killed in Nyeri-Mweiga Road crash

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has ordered a full-scale investigation and announced tougher highway enforcement measures following a deadly road crash that claimed at least 15 lives along the Nyeri–Mweiga Road.

The Saturday accident occurred at the Yunis area near Mweiga in Nyeri County and involved a head-on collision between a matatu and a lorry. Several passengers died on the spot, while others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition.

In the aftermath, Chirchir directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to immediately launch investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The probe is expected to focus on possible causes such as speeding, driver error, vehicle condition, and adherence to traffic regulations.

The CS also announced a renewed nationwide crackdown on traffic offenders, particularly along major highways identified as accident-prone black spots. The move is part of broader government efforts to curb rising road fatalities, with authorities emphasizing stricter compliance and enforcement of traffic laws.

Authorities have increasingly been under pressure to act decisively following a surge in fatal accidents across the country. Recent engagements between NTSA and the National Police Service have pointed to plans for tighter enforcement, improved coordination, and new safety measures targeting reckless driving and non-compliance.

Chirchir’s directive comes amid ongoing reforms in the transport sector, including reviews of speed limits, enforcement mechanisms, and inspection systems aimed at removing unroadworthy vehicles from Kenyan roads. The government has also been exploring the use of surveillance technologies and stricter penalties to deter violations.

Meanwhile, rescue and recovery operations at the crash scene highlighted the severity of the impact, with emergency responders describing the incident as one of the deadliest in the region in recent months. Leaders across the country have sent messages of condolence to the families of the victims.

The tragedy has once again spotlighted the persistent challenge of road safety in Kenya, with stakeholders calling for urgent and sustained action to prevent further loss of life on highways.
