The legal community is reeling after the tragic death of Advocate Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, a highly respected lawyer and academic, who was fatally shot on Tuesday evening.

According to early police reports, the 54-year-old was driving along the Galleria–Brookhouse route toward Ongata Rongai in Karen, Nairobi, when a gunman riding a motorcycle pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi, condemned the killing as “cold-blooded and heinous,” and called for a swift and transparent investigation to hold those responsible to account.

“Wakili Kyalo Mbobu was a distinguished advocate of the High Court of Kenya, an outstanding law scholar, and a dedicated public servant. I was honoured to be one of his students at the Parklands Campus of the University of Nairobi, where we benefited from his intellectual mentorship,” Kingi said.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) also expressed deep sorrow and urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an urgent, thorough inquiry. LSK President Faith Odhiambo warned that this murder underscores the growing risks faced by legal professionals and called for stronger protection measures.

"Kyalo Mbobu was a fine practitioner and an excellent teacher of law. The abhorrent crime that has claimed his life must be dealt with swiftly and conclusively,” stated LSK President Faith Odhiambo.

Throughout his career, Mbobu served as an advocate of the High Court for over three decades and lectured at the University of Nairobi, influencing many future lawyers. He also chaired the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal, contributing significantly to Kenya's governance and legal scholarship.

As the legal world grieves, there are intensified calls for enhanced safety for those upholding the rule of law—and for justice to prevail swiftly in this tragic case.
