Muslim faithful across Kenya assembled in large numbers at mosques and open prayer grounds on Friday to mark Eid ul-Fitr, signaling the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

In Nairobi, thousands gathered at major worship centres including Jamia Mosque and designated fields, filling streets and surrounding areas as early as sunrise.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Mombasa, where worshippers flocked to mosques and beachfront prayer grounds for the special Eid congregational prayers.

Eid ul-Fitr, one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, marks the conclusion of Ramadan, a month defined by fasting from dawn to dusk, increased prayer, and acts of charity.

The day begins with Salat al-Eid, a special prayer performed in congregation, followed by sermons that emphasize unity, gratitude, and continued devotion beyond the fasting period.

Religious leaders used the occasion to call for peace, compassion, and social responsibility, urging faithful to uphold the discipline and moral values cultivated during Ramadan.

A central requirement of the celebration is the giving of Zakat al-Fitr, a mandatory charitable donation made before the Eid prayer to support vulnerable members of society.

Across urban centres and rural towns, families dressed in new or traditional attire, reflecting the festive nature of the day and the cultural diversity within the Muslim community.

Following the prayers, homes and community spaces became centres of celebration, with families sharing meals, exchanging gifts, and hosting relatives and friends.

Markets in key towns recorded heightened activity in the days leading up to Eid, with increased demand for foodstuffs, clothing, and household goods as families prepared for the festivities.

The Kenyan government declared the day a public holiday, allowing Muslims nationwide to fully participate in religious observances and celebrations.

Security was heightened in major towns to manage large crowds, with authorities coordinating with community leaders to ensure peaceful and orderly gatherings.

Despite recent heavy rains and flooding reported in parts of the country, turnout remained strong, highlighting the resilience and commitment of the faithful.

Eid ul-Fitr celebrations are expected to continue throughout the day, with many using the occasion to strengthen family ties, extend acts of generosity, and reaffirm communal bonds.
