EALA’s Sankok Calls For Tax Incentives To Boost Disability Inclusion

EALA Member of Parliament David Ole Sankok has urged the Kenyan government to introduce tax incentives to encourage companies to invest in programmes supporting persons with disabilities.

Sankok said firms that employ a high number of people living with disabilities should benefit from tax exemptions or reduced tax obligations to motivate more businesses to create inclusive workplaces.

He noted that such incentives would encourage companies to support disability inclusion through corporate social responsibility initiatives and expanded employment opportunities.

The lawmaker made the remarks during the 44th Sunshine Rally organised by Rotary International District 9212 in Nairobi, an event that brought together thousands of children living with disabilities.

More than 7,000 children with disabilities attended the rally, which aims to promote inclusion, empowerment and social interaction among young people from special schools and communities.

Sankok said that despite progress made in Kenya on disability inclusion, significant challenges still exist, particularly negative social attitudes and limited access to assistive technologies.

Former Rotary District Governor Alex Nyaga backed the proposal, saying tax incentives would encourage companies to allocate part of their profits to programmes supporting vulnerable groups.

Nyaga added that similar incentive models have been successfully implemented in countries such as the United Kingdom and India to encourage businesses to invest in community initiatives.

District Governor Wairimu Njage said the Sunshine Rally reflects Rotary’s principle of service above self and has grown from a small family event into a major regional gathering supporting children with disabilities.
