Thailand floods disrupt economic activities
Heavy rains that inundated southern Thailand in late November have claimed 267 lives, the country’s health ministry confirmed on Tuesday. The floods affected eight provinces, with Hat Yai district reporting the highest number of fatalities at 142, making it the hardest-hit area in the region.
The floods struck between November 22 and November 27, overwhelming drainage systems and submerging villages and towns. Roads and bridges were washed out, leaving many communities cut off from rescue teams. Authorities warn that the number of people affected remains in the millions.
Rescue and relief operations have been ongoing, but officials say some areas remain inaccessible due to high waters and damaged infrastructure. More than 1.7 million people continue to live under flood conditions, with thousands evacuated to temporary shelters. Emergency aid, including food and medical supplies, is being distributed across affected provinces.
The disaster has caused widespread economic damage, with the government estimating losses at over 500 billion baht. Hospitals were forced to evacuate patients, and local businesses, schools, and farms suffered significant destruction. Officials have pledged compensation and support for rebuilding efforts.
Climate experts have linked the severity of the floods to increasingly erratic weather patterns in Southeast Asia. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue, while emphasizing the importance of official updates and safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
