Two suspects have been arrested in Ukunda Township following an intelligence-led operation conducted by coastal security agencies targeting narcotics trafficking networks. The coordinated raid resulted in the seizure of cocaine and cannabis with an estimated combined street value of more than Sh2 million.
The operation was spearheaded by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, working alongside other security units in the coastal region. Authorities said the raid followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering aimed at dismantling suspected drug distribution channels operating within the township.
During the operation, detectives recovered approximately 250 grams of a white powder believed to be cocaine. The substance has an estimated market value of about Sh1 million, pending forensic analysis to confirm its composition.
In addition, officers seized roughly 35 kilograms of suspected cannabis, commonly referred to as bhang. The haul, packed in rolls inside a half-filled sack, is valued at approximately Sh1.05 million according to preliminary assessments by investigators.
Several mobile phones were also recovered at the scene. Investigators believe the devices could contain crucial information regarding supply chains, financial transactions and possible accomplices linked to the suspects.
The two men, aged 32 and 38, were taken into custody and are being held pending arraignment. Detectives indicated that the pair are under investigation for possible involvement in a broader narcotics distribution network operating along the coast.
Preliminary findings suggest the suspects may have been coordinating distribution within Ukunda and neighboring areas. Authorities are pursuing additional leads to identify other individuals who may be connected to the operation.
Security agencies have intensified anti-narcotics efforts in the coastal corridor amid concerns over rising drug trafficking activities. The region has historically been flagged as a transit and distribution point due to its strategic location and transport links.
Officials reiterated their commitment to combating drug-related crime across Kenya, urging members of the public to share information that could assist ongoing investigations. The suspects are expected to face drug trafficking charges once investigations are concluded
