DCI Condemns Assault And Exclusion Of Journalists At State Events

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned the harassment and exclusion of journalists during the Madaraka Day celebrations held at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
Several media professionals, including journalists from Royal Media Services, Nation Media Group, and TV47, were reportedly assaulted by security personnel despite presenting valid press credentials. Some required medical attention, while others lost personal belongings during the incident.
In a separate event on 31st May at State House, KTN journalists Rashid Iddi and Okumu Madocha were barred from covering a Kenya–Slovenia press briefing. Their names were omitted from the accredited list, and official channels reportedly failed to respond to inquiries.
“These incidents highlight a concerning trend of deliberate targeting of media professionals, undermining their vital role,” said the Media Council in the statement.
The council emphasized that such actions violate Article 34 of the Kenyan Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press. MCK urged state event organizers to ensure accredited journalists are given access and protection and called for reconciliation and accountability moving forward.
